二氧化釩具有低於100℃的相變化溫度,它在68℃時具有金屬-絕緣體轉換的能力。當環境溫度低於68℃(Tc)時,二氧化釩的原子排列結構為非金屬相的Monoclinic結構,而當環境溫度高於68℃(Tc)時,它就會相變化形成金屬相的Tatragonal Rutile結構。當在高於68℃(Tc)環境溫度時,由於電子軌域的改變使得二氧化釩由非導體或半導體態轉變為導體,相對地,也會使二氧化釩的光學性質產生變化。當溫度低於68℃(Tc)時,二氧化釩則為半導體材料,所以其電子雲分布會較稀疏,故IR光可以穿透。若當溫度高於68℃(Tc)時,二氧化釩則為導電相,其電子雲分布較為緊密,而導致IR光無法有效穿透。

從此可知,二氧化釩可因溫度變化使得它對IR光具有調控穿透度的功能。因此,二氧化釩可作為智慧窗的材料,及為利用溫度差異來調節近紅外線(Near Infrared Ray, NIR)的穿透量,而達到溫控的效果。另外,由於車輛引擎在作動過程中會產生大量的廢熱,故在熱顯像照片中即形成明顯的亮區。在此種狀況下,裝甲車是非常容易在敵軍面前暴露其行蹤,故本研究將嘗試將二氧化釩製成塗料,並將塗料均勻塗佈於車輛表面,則可藉由二氧化釩的相變化過程使裝甲車發動機廢熱傳導至車輛鋼板表面的溫度不會過高,而達到一個熱偽裝的效果。
