本研究旨在記錄與探討曾經為臺灣社會的成長、安定、與繁榮進步，而付出大半生心力的外省老兵其生命歷程及其對人生看法之影響，研究以立意取樣七位歷經過抗日戰爭及國共內戰後，隨國民政府撤退來台之外省老兵，亦即退輔會定義之資深榮民為對象，本研究以質性研究中半結構式深度訪談，以內容分析法，統整、歸納並分析其實務意涵與研究省思。藉由研究得到結果如下：一、萌芽與成長：他們生於烽火連天的年代，民國初建軍閥割據，八年抗日戰爭民生凋弊，及至國共內戰社會動亂，無以生計，有志願從軍之愛國青年，有被強行抓兵充員，更有逃難流亡學生被迫從軍，他們在兵慌馬亂的社會動盪不安中萌芽與成長，在死裡逃生與大難不死後仍能勇敢堅毅生存。二
